Away from the crowd yet still in the heart of Douglas, HQ Bar and Restaurant within the Mereside guest house is equally popular with visitors and locals. Once you come and discover it for yourself, you’ll find out why. Its unusual name stems from the fact that the rooms functioned as army headquarters during the Second World War. Now, the light, spacious interior bears no traces of its former military purpose but a display of old prints gives a sense of history.

Review of HQ Bar & Restaurant - Douglas - Isle of Man written 21 Apr 2012
We ate at HQ based on reviews we had read elsewhere and, to our delight, found that those reviews were totally accurate. HQ Bar & Restaurant does, indeed, lift the wining-dining experience up a notch in Douglas. It's not the "type" of food, nor the "choice" of food, because that's all pretty standard stuff in GB. It was the attention to detail, the excellent service, the relaxed atmosphere, the great beer (Bosun), the hot, fresh food, the quick service and the good value. Can't say fairer than that!
